[Woodturning] Munro like big telescopic hollowing tool

This is my new deep hollowing "multi'-tool.
The handle is actually a "Rebuild" (other people on other social netwoks "retweet", but here on HMT, we "rebuild" )

It's an idea I read in the HMT daily newsletter, a couple of weeks ago I think. The guy did a telescopic handle with aluminium ends and a PVC pipe body.
Obviously, I did the same replacing the PVC by wood :

For the cutting part, I chose to use both ends of the bar, on one side there is a hole to attach cylindrical shank accessories, that can be of all types, carbide insert on support, HSS scraper on support or even a rooter bit.

And at the other end, I have milled a flat platform for attaching flat inserts like that big scaper made from an HSS shaper blade :

I leave that side for future improvement, I will probably do, one day or the other, some articulated links in order to get a curved cutting head for working in narrow opening vessels (but I do not plan to do much vessels like that)

    Christophe,
Looks a very versatile tool with so many options. It is like a QCTP equivalent for wood turning.
    Thanks for detailed photos,
    Paul

Thanks Christophe! Beautiful, really versatile and a Great build! The way you formed the square hole in your handle was very interesting and wondered how you did it on something this long. The write up on your site was great too. The idea of a interchangeable/functional tool has always been a thing to strive for IMHO...this is a great example. I'll be posting my metal scraper system shortly as I just finished it and need to post it on my site first. Also had missed your Turning centers...those are great too!! Think I'll be making a set of those as this project was my first at turning wood on my Peanut. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work. ~PJ

    Hi Paul and PJ,
Thanks for the kind words !
Yes, that gluing was a bit tough, here are some pictures of how I did it :

(I make intensive use of these inner tube strips, I have kilometers in the shop ! )

Actually I used the bar as a mold, but I wrapped it first at both ends and in the middle with several laps of masking tape, just to avoid having a too much tight fit.
Anyway, un-molding after the glue has dried was a bit difficult, because the white glue did catch the masking tape ... I had to tap it with a big hammer !

Follow up on this tool :
A few pictures with the different cutting tips, and a video with the router bit.

Strange enough, the router bit is not far from being my favorite. (quick and nice finish)

Beautiful Chips Christophe, and a pleasure to see your new tool in action!! It looks in the video to me that the mass/length of the tool really gives a steady & uniform cut and likely easier to control. I'm not sure of what it's called when you first start turning rough wood (?) but that tool looks to me like it would do wonders and be rock steady!! Thanks for the update and Video clip! ~PJ
