The trunk(s) that opened to the side were unusual too, if somewhat impractical.

Yep back in the day cars really had style and function even if some designs lacked practicality.many did it with vacuum canisters that looked like coffee cans and bellows servos think 1966 Lincoln. Or innovative complicated hydraulic systems with a mile of spaghetti lines even hid away Hard tops for those who wanted a convertible but didn't like rag tops.
Today all cars look alike from the cheapest to the most luxurious some brands even swap parts with competing manufactures last years models. All have a dozen or more micro computers and miles upon miles of wiring that is only large enough to carry milliamp currents which only works or last well in a perfect world. OH they can warn you when you drift out of your lane stop for you while you are otherwise occupied on your all important stupidity phone some can even drive for you because you are no longer to be trusted to drive for your self Cars can communicate with each other and can still get them selves and you lost in any given city. And what used to be a $10.00 scratch now is a several thousand dollar repaint Heaven forbid you hit a shopping cart in a parking lot because your car will have to be totaled due to the extensive damage. Give me the massive cancer causing chrome bummers of the 50s era that weighed half as much as today's throwaway cars any day over plastic
Never try to tell me it can't be done
When I have to paint I use KBS products
