Another dead simple lathe tool height gauge

Marv just posted a simple tool height gauge at http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/d...ht-gauge-57996
Here is another dead simple version that I use. It is not claimed to be any better than Marv's but is just offered as an alternative in the vein of simplicity and avoiding paying for a fancy device which works no better.
I used an old adjustable square as the base for this device, and I cut out some clearance for the tool and set the top surfaces of the cutouts at centre height.

Here is the height gauge. The rectangular cutout is used for turning and facing tools, whereas the other cutout in the back is for setting boring bars. It is just more convenient to do that from the back of the gauge.

This shows it in action. I just raise the tool until it just touches the underside of the height reference.

BTW. The HSS tool bit in the picture was sharpened in the T&C grinder which I posted a while back at http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/h...fference-56205

The dead cheap Chinese combination squares available from bottom-feeder suppliers like Harbor Freight are almost universally unfit for purpose. If someone is unlucky enough to have one, this is a great repurposing of it.

The only concern I would have with this design is the possibility that the blade might slip in the frame due to a drop or rough handling. I would use a pair of pliers to thoroughly torque down the screw that locks the blade position.

No argument there, but I have a carpeted workshop floor to give dropped things an easy landing.

    Braggart. (Just kidding, Tony.)

Garaj Mahal is pretty posh, too. As the result of SWMBO's recent bathroom do-over, I now have white, monogrammed shop towels. There, take that! :-)

Actually, my remark wasn't directed at you. I pointed it out for the benefit of others who might use your idea.
