Boring bar adapter
A while back I bought a set of small cemented tip boring bars.
Now there are 2 things wrong with this #1 I don't have a boring head for my mills to use them in and #2 I had no good way to use them on my lathe unles I just tightened 1 in a tool holder. This would mean the 3/4" shanks would be damaged.
SO as luck would have it today the only TPG 322 insert I had for my !" boring bar shattered. THe bar was used when I bought it and someone had previously ground the support tip down or possibly had just bottomed it out anyway the insert was not supported near the tip so it didn't take much to break the insert. This was only the 2nd time I had tried to use it and had forgotten that I need to build up the end to original. Couple that with an interrupted cut which is always murder on inserts. Not quite as bad on cemented or HSS but still not fun.
Anyway this left me without a boring bar to complete what I was doing. So I decided to make an adapter sleeve out of a piece of 1" 1018 cold roll bar.
After creating a hollow cylinder by first drilling to 23/32 then finishing off the bore with 1 of my smaller short boring bars I then spiting it on the band saw
I have found that the use of sacrificial clamping plates work great for securing a small part such as a hollow cylinder when you need to split them

Frank,
Nice work on the sleeves and also the advice on using the sacrificial clamping plates. I think the split sleeve boring bar adapters are a great addition for the shop because these make better use of the QCTP specifically designed for boring tools and, as you mentioned, also protects the sliding surfaces of the boring bar shanks.
Thanks for the posting,
Paul
