your right the inserts have a 7° clearance angle built into them, that was not modified, instead of the inserts face or edge being parallel with the shank the inserts point is inverted 3° towards the chuck, Hope this photo clears things up for you.

Nice score from the sale doug. I read something recently about the variations of quality between name brand inserts and Chinese ones. I have several cheapies and one unknown brand. The unknown keeps an edge much longer. Like the offset in your design, nice

I reckon I need to hit some yard sales...... good work!!! Ive made a few special holders for doing cylinder head seat work to hold inserts.mine are kinda crude compared to yours, but they do the job just fine and are interchangeable with expensive ones, no I didnt coppy any i just did some thinking and what sizes I thought woule be smallenough but big/thick enough to keep chatter/flex away.when i was done I stoped by a buddys shop and he had a set there so i compared....same thickness & basic size.sweet!!. I admire your work. most of my stuff is what material I have laying around,not a clue as to the grade and made to do the job I need done now. I did make that "3D ball seat cutter" kinda for the long run but I only do my stuff so...it will last me forever.

I like this idea of an offset in the chip holder shank; even more that tip is oriented CCW 3° to face off, especially to shoulders. I can't offer any explanation why this isn't apparent in commercially made holders. Like Doug, I'm not a devotee of Carbide. They certainly have their place, but are not my go-to choice.
I'd like to trip across a box of Rex AAA high speed sometime; flycut, turning, even on the shaper, greatest bits ever.
