    DRILL PRESS THICKNESS SANDER (2)

Previously, I showed a Drill press thickness-sander, made with sanding drums and a fence. In this version I used a 3.5” Ø sanding disc made with a plate and shank, reused from a discarded laboratory apparatus. The thickness is achieved vertically, between the sanding disc and the drill press table, so it can sand larger pieces than when using sanding drums.

In the first try I glued sanding paper to the disk, so it wasn't easy to change it for other grits or when it was worn. In the next try, I glued Velcro strips to the support, and to the sandpaper discs, which let easily change between sanding grits.

I forgot to mention that because of the diameter of the piece (3.5”) it was necessary to use the headstock riser block (red arrow), as well as to rise the tool holder. Here are the RISER BLOCKS FOR UNIMAT LATHE.
