    Expanding packaging foam - GIF

    Expanding packaging foam. Chemical reaction between polymeric isocyanate and polyurethane resin causes the foam to expand inside the bag.

    At the company I work at, we have that style of machine where it fills the bag automatically, and we also have another one for making custom shapes. That one is more interesting as we use a 2-part wood mold, lay in plastic sheeting, then spray in the 2-part foam and quickly shut the mold. The foam expands and cures in less than a minute, then open the mold and start over. We use that to make custom packaging for protecting our products in wood crates. I helped acquire that particular machine in our Shanghai, China facility. It is an exothermic reaction, so there is plenty of heat generated. You don't want to just spray a big pile of it! The material comes in 55 gal drums, and the gun can dispense it quite quickly! Too much and you have a mess.
