While the engineering and investment was significant to build such a system the amount of time saved water saved and land area saved to elevate or lower those metro transport type boats will more than defray the up front cost . to construct a lock system which would probably have even cost more to have built.

All boat lifts are amazing, this one is amazing with style!

I think the cool thing is the actual load on the lift never changes. The boats displace an amount of water equal to their weight, so the two sides are always balanced.
