Garbage disposal switches are often located in places where they are easily bumped or switched on accidentally. Like when cleaning the wall behind the sink.
There is a standard that says they should be located a minimum of 12 inches above the counter top and behind the sink or off to one side. Also a lot of people keep their counter tops cluttered with small appliances and other things like cutlery sets located near the sink. or dish washing liquids hand disinfectants or the like behind the sink.And lastly there are the young cabinet climbers and as bad as it sounds the family pets when no one is around.
Any of these would be a purpose for someone wanting to place a guard over the switch.

Personally, I think they should be GFCI and water resistant to keep from getting zorted while doing dishes and reaching over with out drying hands to flip the switch...but that's me. With this thing I think you will need a finger and a thumb to operate it. Perhaps a flip up guard like a Red safety switch...again just me.

or get a dog then there will be no table scraps to grind up and clog your drains with.

Haven't had a Garbage disposal or unfortunately a Dog in over 20 years....but the dog works as well as composting.

with 4 cats 2 dogs 15 chickens and 2 guinea foul things stay pretty much ecologically sound around our place the dogs and cats keep the small rodent population down to next to nothing the guinea keep the tick and flea population down the chickens get just about every bug you can imagine, with the droppings of all of these scattered around there is no need for chemical enhancements. Ashes from our wood stove get scattered everywhere as well
the clean out of the chicken coop gets mixed with the egg shells and coffee grounds for the garden. Bark chips and chainsaw cuttings are used as mulch the only 2 things missing are the rain and sunshine. We get plenty of sunshine and just have to hope for rain occasionally
