    Thumbs up Gear Cutter

Well I've got to start somewhere, I've been lurking around here long enough.
Here is my approximate involute gear cutter, turned down from some un-known steel from the calculations from this siteInvolute Gears

    Gear Cutter-img_20150724_161357.jpg

It was then pack hardened for 2 Hrs. at 1800* F And the teeth honed on a diamond lap.

Set up in my homemade knee mill (Witch will be another post as soon as I get a few more pics.)

    And the final gear.

Although I believe I forgot to add the extra for whole depth plus clearance it does run on the lathe, but a little noisier than the other change gears.

Your post caught me by surprise as this post is a couple years old! As to the mill, I used it for a little les than a year never really completely finished it and got offered enough for it by a shop that wanted a heavy-duty drill press with cross slide table that I was able to pay for a smoking deal on a used mill taken out of service at the Intalco Aluminum plant here.
I think the only picture I have left of it is the one in my avitar

Guilty as charged! We've been putting in a lot of work on featuring these oldie-but-goodie posts in the Must Read subforum. This includes a new Best Homemade Tools page with all of our Must Read tools, a new homepage that features new content mixed in with Must Read threads, and we now incorporate 3-5 Must Read threads into our daily newsletter.

The Involute Gear Cutter is something I am going to try very soon. Thanks for posting.

On a side note you use the "*" for your degree mark. There is a very special way to get the real degree mark and I'm going to let you in on it. Hold down your "ALT" and punch in 248 in the number pad to the right of the keyboard. It will show when you let go of the "ALT" key- °

Nice to see this thread again...Great build!

Alt-0176 is what I have used for years °¿°. Thanks ncollar, saves a keystroke for an old ASCII guy. Δ² ∙ Ωⁿ±Ø ≈ ∞

Here is a table for others enjoyment and use. This website is pretty good too.

Thank you so very must for the site. There is so much hidden in the keyboard most people haven't a clue about.
    Again thanks

Thank You Nelson! Hadn't explored Alt codes much but will add to the repertoire. Cut and paste works but it's nice to play with the original emoji's sometimes.
