Gun drill setup for wood
Hi,
To finish with my gundrill series, I will show the complete setup at work :
In addition to the previous post, what is still needed is a chip collector to collect all the small chips that would get otherwise propelled at high speed throughout the shop.
Here is my solution :
http://www.labellenote.fr/file/homem..._collector.jpg
It's basically made out of PVC and acrylic scraps I found around the shop.
A PVC pipe reducer, a PVC 40mm elbow, a piece of transparent acrylic (very useful to see what happens behind), and a piece of foam to make a joint with the drill bit.
This collector is installed against the steady rest, I use some straps of of inner tube rubber for that.
Last addition is a bit of silicon tape that must be wrapped arount the shank of the bit to avoid any air leakage :

On the small yellow gundrill, you can see a sleeve with a set screw that I turned up to adapt the 10mm diameter that had this particular drill to the 19mm of my gundrill holder.
And here we go :
I show here the most challenging long drilling situation I can have : drill a 3.6 mm (0.1440") hole on a ~30cm (16") long stock of hardwood.

The little runout I get at the end could probably be improved, but it's absolutely not an issue, because the stock is then turned between centers around the hole.
The important is that the hole is straight and with a perfect finish.

Thanks Christophe. Impressive setup and seeing it work was great. Those gun drills work great. Couldn't see much in the was of swarf/chips but couldn't hear any singing or chatter either! Interesting that you fed the tail stock by hand the whole way.
Thanks for sharing your set up and build...lots of good ideas from it! ~PJ
