Hello every body ! New guy from Iowa !!

Hello ! I have lurked the pages of this forum for a while and decided to sign up . I came here looking at planishing hammers and have found some great information .

I like to make the things that I use rather than buying them,, as long as it is feasible.

I have made and or modified attachments for my garden tractor such as an ariens 2 stage snow blower on my X475, A 60" power angle belly blade for grading my driveway,,54" hydraulic drive broom,, 3 point quick hitch,, etc .

Thank You for letting me join !!

Have a great day !!! Tom

Thanks for the welcome !!! Here are a few pics of the snow blower. This was a fairly simple conversion,, I had to change the ratio of the drive because in the original set up the blower drove from the front of the engine at around 3500 RPM. My tractor drives from the trans-axle at 2000Rpm. The pulley closest to the blower housing was changed from a 10" to a 6" I believe. The pulley closest to the blower housing drives the snow blower,, the pulley closest to the tractor is free wheeling to drive the double pulley to achieve the reduction. The blower wants to run right at 1000 Rpm and I am very close to that. The mount was pretty straight forward. I made the quick-tach bracket to fit the front of the tractor and then modified the mount arms to fit my bracket. Welded in a cross member to attach the hydraulic cylinder to the blower and the other end to my bracket. Altho the picture shows a hydraulic cylinder on the spout swivel it blew a seal last winter and was changed to an electric actuater. I will try to find pics of the belly blade and 3 point kwik hitch.

    Hi Tom,

Welcome - great to have you here!

Did you ever wind up building a planishing hammer?

When you're ready to share some of your own homemade tools, we'd love to see them. Please post them directly in the Homemade Tools subforum. We'll add each one to the database, as well as to your builder page on the site.

Non-tool items should be shared in the Not a Tool, but Homemade subforum.

That's a nice pulley system you did there for driving the blower.

DIYer The pulley system is original to the blower,,,, all I did was change one pulley to maintain the blower speed with my input which is slower than the original .

It will be a while before I can start building a hammer,, Still working on the shop,, I have heat now so that lets me work out there when it's cold. Hopefully in the next year or so I can get one built. I have already found a couple of designs on here that I really like !!

Should I post the snow blower in the Not a Tool, but Homemade subforum ? Then it could go on there rather than clogging up this section.

    Altair You are welcome !!

Thank you to every one that has welcomed me and commented on the snow blower project !!!

Have a great day !!! Tom

    Hi Tom,

I can sympathize with the cold shop scenario. I built an airplane in suburban Boston over 2.5 years, which meant three winters spent with shop heaters running. Sometimes it was a couple of hours in the mornings before I could touch anything metallic (tools, airplane parts, etc.) with my bare hands. I'm much happier now working on my current car project in Florida - I just want to get it done before I need a shop air conditioner next spring!

You can post the snow blower project in the Homemade Tools forum. There's certainly enough modification there to qualify. I'll get it added to the database directly.

Again, welcome! We're very glad to have you here.

    Ken
