I particularly like the newer modules idea where there is a saw module that drops into the table that can be easily replaced with a router module. Their earlier models all used hand held electric saws mounted upside down in a sheet metal table and the Triton Workcentre Mk3 model had a similar size sheet metal table for a router which could be mounted on the side. Australian made but available in most countries and have good reviews.
Building two drop in modules with a saw and router of your choice attached seems an excellent idea to me. You would then be able to build a table to suit and use the same fences and guides on both modules. They often sell cheaply second hand here in NZ because the paint wears off the table surfaces, they get rusty and they start to look shabby, but they are still good machines and worth saving. check out your local auction sites for "Triton Saw".
