Interesting that the coil spacing widens as it gets longer??

first 2 turns, and last 2 turns will need to be tight to form the bearing surface for the spring - either by a second set of forging operations, or grinding. - all of the middle turns have the spacing to allow the spring to function properly with the correct rate and range.

desbromilow, is correct Note how the man gives the flattened end a slight twist as it nears the mandrel to bring the flattened end to the correct plane.

I get spring design which is relatively complex. Perhaps it is partly an optical dilusion and must be controlled by the horizontal feed rate of the mandrel. Nice catch Frank, on the twisting of the final feed to the mandrel.

I’m wondering if they are going to remove that spring from the mandrel to harden it while it is hot or reheat it.
At National Springs in Botany, our coil springs were formed on a mandrel which then retracted quite quickly to drop the spring directly into the hardening oil.
The coils of our springs were spaced with a “nagative” of the spring cut into a second roller.
