    Iris valves - GIFs

I still don't fully understand the use cases for iris valves. In what applications do you need that precise control over fluid flow? Can the valves even close 100%? Are they typically used in conjunction with gate valves, so that the gate valve acts as an isolating valve, and then the iris valve controls the flow precisely?

However, they play prominently in science fiction movies, and their operation is aesthetically pleasing.

Here's a nice GIF of an iris valve opening.

And here's an iris valve opening on a trash can. Not exactly of critical use to society, but still cool.

    Here's one from the internet:

IRIS VALVE. The patented Vortex Iris Valve is designed specifically to handle dry bulk solids in gravity discharge of free-flowing material from bins, bulk bags, chutes, and hoppers. ... A form fitted fabric sleeve provides a dust tight seal and product barrier, which prevents material leakage into the atmosphere.

Key Industries Served: Agriculture, Chemicals, Foods, Minerals, Petrochemicals, Plastics, Textiles

Dumpling maker. Perhaps not a valve per se, but excellent iris motion, and for a legitimately useful application.

In effect it is a an iris valve to shape the buns...Yum, a bit too perfect but wets the appetite. Ceramic ones are used in coal fired power plants to control the fuel/air mixture in the pipes (precise metering) as well as control the roping that occurs on straight run 7 diameters out from an elbow. Worked on a PLC control system for one, years ago.

Titled as "Aperture" wrench, but this is a perfect fit for this thread's iris theme. From an industrial design project on Behance, by Jordan Steranka. I must assume my default position: gimmicky. However, I would love to be wrong. More: https://www.behance.net/gallery/2716...perture-Wrench

While the concept is valid, the inventor will find that real world application may be less so. However if made from suitably hard and durable materials it could have its purpose in certain areas however the use of cylindrical pins as the means of closing the aperture segments are the first weak points of the design.
the use of elongated crescent shaped pins would afford a much stronger and more precise method of controlling the relative positions of the segments.
The bulkiness could be greatly reduced much like as the ratcheting box end wrenches evolved from their first copies to the present models
Never try to tell me it can't be done

Interesting design Jon. Have seen a wrench similar that used roller bearings in a similar manor, just can't remember where. Like Frank says, not sure how well it will hold up or what limitations it will have for use but a good concept, ripe for refinement. More that I like the site. Hadn't been there before nor seen it in any of my Adobe forum/emails. Found it a treasure trove of creativity and Adobe Based. Thanks for the link...I'll spend some time there when I can.

Wouldn't this wrench tend to tighten with one face (holding tension) and loosen with the other face towards the fastener?
