Knife making Vise
Finally got around to making a knife vise on the weekend. Cost around $20 in materials. Was dead simple, cant believe I had not done it sooner. Clamps blade in, rotates in two planes. 50mm NB heavy wall pipe slide into square tube (65mmx2mm). Took about an hour. I used 22mm quarter round wood, glued and pinned to half round as it was way cheaper than 45mm round and I didn't have a band saw to split it. An aluminium strip protects the wood, I should have used steel but didnt have anything ready to go, had the aluminium left over from another project. May need to replace it over time but it doesnt need much force to hold a blade so should last a while.

Great way to safely secure the blade while working on the tang.

That's clever. And very usefull too.

Nice! Now I just have to determine if it can be done with *(#&)*^! American-dimensioned stuff. :-(
(I'm sure it CAN - question is whether it works as well, fits snugly enough, etc.)

It wont be hard to find, I am pretty sure the 50mm NB (Nominal Bore, in other words, closeISH) heavy pipe is actually 2", it is around 51mm. You dont need heavy wall round pipe if you weld a nut on, I just went heavy to tap it directly and the heavy was a nice fit into the square. The fit in the square pipe is not critical, although mine is a very nice fit (around 1mm clearance, I needed to file the weld seam), the locking bolt being at a corner will push any smaller size into the opposite corner holding it snugly either way.

Great work man!! You've inspired me to finally breakdown and build the vise I have been needing to make for over a year now. I had wood jaws in my bench vise and always have to keep repositioning it. So now I know what im doing this weekend. Thanks for the motivation!!

ACinSV ,
That's no biggie...
Just write on the back of your calculator in your shop: 1 mm = .03937 in. or 1 in. = 25.4 mm
Pretty soon you will remember it and won't need the reference.
