Lantern Chuck AKA Screw modification chuck

I needed 3 dog point screws for my new heavy duty tripod. Already had some nice brass thumb screws but they lacked the dog point.
Shelley had a nice one on Homemade tools a few years back that I liked so I made my own version based on his pictures.
Here is the link for Shelly's version..

I used a 7/8-14 piece of all thread for the arbor and some mystery metal (hot rolled 1.25" dia) for the "lantern".
It has a capacity of up to 5/8 inch using bushings of the proper size to fit the screw.
The screw is held captive by the head and threaded arbor. It gets tighter as the screw is turned in the lathe (ccw of course).
Simple flats on the arbor and lantern are used to tighten or loosen the screw in the chuck.

Bushings were made in two types. One that is threaded to be used with set screws and the other type
which is not threaded but a close fit for the nominal screw size.

Spacers were made to keep the stickout short. Works fine and hope it lasts a long time.

    Cheers, JR

Call me clueless. A picture would tell much about what this is, how it's used, what it looks like in action and what sorts of parts it enables.

Hello Jim and thanks for checking in.
Picture number 1 shows two screws that have been modified with this tool.
One is a set screw with a Dog Point end. Very handy when you need a screw that can apply pressure at the end of the screw and not get the threads crushed on the end which would make the screw hard to remove. The other is a 1/4-20 bolt. In use the tool is placed in the lathe spindle and then the two or three threads at the end may be removed.

Picture number 2 shows the Lantern Chuck holding a 1/4-20 bolt. It is secured in the chuck with the threaded arbor and is ready to be put in the lathe so that a point, or dog point may be put on the end of the bolt.

For bolts that need shortening it can do that also.

Limited use but handy when you need it.

    Thanks again, JR

    Hi JR
Thank you for the post I will be making one as I have over 60 3/16" copper rivets I have to thread 2BA for stays in a copper boiler I am curently making. As you can appreciate I need to find a quick way to load and unload each round head rivet, I like this method which in conjuntion with my coventry die head, think this will be a good starting point to hold the stays and cut the threads. Which will also give good repeatability as the rivet head is against a fixed stop. So many thanks for taking the time to post.
    The home engineer.
