Lathe Measure Once Cut 10 Times or More

Probably not a new idea but I have not seen a setup where two carriage stops are used.
With this setup you only have to measure the setup once and then just repeat the steps for
extending, facing, drilling, and cutoff. The cutoff tool is used as the starting point of the part.

    Here is what was cut:

Left carriage stop is for the final cutoff operation:

Right carriage stop is used for the stop when extending the stock from the chuck
The stock is extended until it reaches the left side of the cutoff tool:

Spacer being drilled without center drilling. Short machine type drill bit used:

Left carriage stop is used for final cutoff. Note the thickness of the cutoff tool was considered
when setting the stops. The right hand stop is not using the micrometer adjustment. It is simply
hitting the extended carriage gibs that I installed on my mini lathe.

    Hi JR

Thank you for posting. I have two stops on my machine it is so useful for this type of component.
I hope you don’t mind I have put a link in to my web site showing a similar setup making screws. I use the second stop to travel the saddle towards the tailstock which creates a home position, pull the material out just past the facing tool, face off, this creates the front datum (Z axis). Also, on the first photo there are two tools set in the compound slide tool post, this faces, turns the screw O/D and chamfers at the same time, once you have travelled to the stop at the headstock end. I then finish the screws, using the capstan attachment then rear tool post parts off to length. I have a indexing multi stop I made to support this type of setup I will do a separate post on this. The first photo unfortunately doesn’t show the stop tailstock stop, I could have set a stop in the capstan but it is just another tool that can get in the way.

Thank you for sharing I like this and I need to make a lot of spacers for a fire grate for one of my engines so will be using your idea.

I have seen them before but have not made one yet. Big advantage I see is actually two fold.
One is you have a lot of positions instead of only two. The other is the tail stock is not hindered by the
    outboard carriage stop.

Thanks for posting that one Frank.

    Cheers, JR

The clamps are bicycle seat clamps and are available on eBay and other places on the net.
