Marking Knife: Layout Tool and Height Gage

My favorite marking out knife is flat on one face and beveled on the other. Turns out it is also useful as a height gage when I need to lower a cutter until it touches a reference surface.

Did you grind the 30° bevel freehand or in a fixture when creating the marking knife. The edge looks very straight.
