    Model Cannon and carriage

    I turned the cannon some time ago and just got around to making the carriages for them.

    The longest is 6" long and the other one is 5".

    Cheers, JR

    Cannons

    15 years ago (2002) I also made couple of cannons. Metal parts in workshop and wooden parts in the cabin.
    Never fully completed and presently stored under my bed together with muzzle loaders (handguns and rifles).

    Best regards

    Nice work LMMasterMariner, I really like the way they look in brass. I may just have to make some more!

    Hello JR

    This is the way they look now. Also didn't mention in my previous reply that these cannons are lethal weapons.

    Cheers

    The patina of the aged brass is outstanding. I think they look better with the aged look. Looks like Bronze.
    Mine are not lethal, they are just for display. However in my past youth I did make a couple that could be loaded with shotgun powder!

    Excellent work;
    Cheers, JR

    Recent posts on model cannons have reminded me of a 5 inch bronze barrel I made about 50 years ago when I first got a lathe. The reason it never got finished is quite amusing, I test fired it in my fathers garage with some black powder and a Jetex fuse with a 5/16 ball bearing, well it worked so well my father confiscated it after he heard the explosion, I think I overdid the charge and it scared me a bit and when we moved house some years later the ball was still embedded in the garage door.
    I assumed he got rid of it but bless him when going through his effects I found it in a drawer, it looks nicely aged now so I think I will finish it as a display item.

    Thanks for posting your cannon Dan. I had a similar with my .30 cal smooth bore when I was 16 or so. I used the jetex fuse also and had 30 lbs of lead on top of the cannon that was mounted to an electrical box. I fired mine outside with shotgun powder and had my target about 5' from an old bucket.
    When that thing went off the cannon flew back about 10' into a block wall and the bucket flew more than 25' into the ravine. Went to the edge and looked down at the bucket with a nice .30 cal hole in it...When I went down and picked up the bucket I got the rest of the story. There was a very ragged hole about 5" in diameter blown in that bucket...Guess I had too much powder in it....Never did that again!
