    Modifying an Arbor Press

This work was done by "TinkerJohn" as you can see in this Youtube video:

"TinkerJohn" has come up with a brilliant yet simple modification to an Arbor Press that lets the user easily adjust the angle of the cross bar. His video says it all.

My meager contribution here is to show you a few pictures of how I followed TinkerJohn's design and to tell you that it works great!

Thanks for posting that. That is a simple but brilliant solution. Those of us who don't have a arbor press with a ratchet on it always struggle to get the angle on the handle for the best best leverage advantage and this cures this problem. I have a Jet 3 ton arbor press and the only problem is it might take a couple of tries to get the right angle because of the long stroke.

on my arbor press I simply allow the stem to make contact with the part then slip the shaft out enough to rotate it to achieve the desired handle angle
Never try to tell me it can't be done
When I have to paint I use KBS products

    A modification of the mod

This is a nice tool mod - and very easy to do. However, I didn't like the idea of losing a bit of travel on my small arbor press, so instead of grinding two teeth off the rack, I milled out a small section below the bottom tooth instead. Turned out to work just as well, and I didn't lose any rack travel. See the link below for more details:

Nice to see you used the proper tool and love the idea of an area that was just there waiting for a smart person like yourself to use. I remember that project in an old Popular Mechanic or similar magazines. I believe they removed it from the top because like most arbor presses we have blocks and pins to finish pushing.
Very nice, thank you for sharing

Last shop had a big Dake copy, more impression than copy, more [derogatory Asian term] than Dake for sure. There was no restraint collar on left side of pinion. Size and height of press vs little old me, always had to re-position arbor. Hazardous endeavor sometimes, free falling ram might be 30+ kinetic pounds (?) in a small surface area. Ouch.

I deduced how far the pinion needed to retract so a different rack tooth could be engaged and bored a collar to that depth, with diameter a close slip on the section, retained by capscrew through same side.
AFTER the ram contacts work piece...handle is re-set for efficient press. Usually pushing a keyway broach, those aren't tolerant of a lot mistakes.
