Multi V Block
I made this little v-block to the same dimensions as my 4" Mill Vise stationary jaw, The v-block was made from o-1 steel, hardened, tempered and precision ground all over.
It will accommodate round stock from .046" to 2.000" in diameter. The V grooves are 120 deg included angle, This is what gives the block the ability to hold such a wide range of diameters over the standard 90 deg blocks. This block is much thinner than standard blocks which gives you more room in your vise for your work.
The block will hold all the mentioned diameters in the vertical or horizontal plane.
There are two 10-24 tapped holes in each end of the block for a stop or bolting to something. I didn't put the holes in the cad drawings, It was something I decided to do right before I heat treated the steel.
Below are some photos
As always thanks for looking and happy machining
Doug

Great job, I know that requires a lot of patience and attention to the project.
Thanks for sharing.:hattip:

A Really well thought out tool. Simple idea and very useful with beautiful execution. I've had thoughts and needs for something like this for a while now...and here it is. Thanks very much for sharing your expertise & drawings with a novice like myself! Now if I only had a grinder...:p

I want one of those....:O) nice work.

Very nice... Again!
You mentioned on another project you have heat treating facilities. But I was wondering, on more slender & irregular pieces like this, with deep or non-symmetrical cut features, is there an advantage to going with Air hardening tool steel to minimize quenching distortion vs. O1? Or is that easily factored in the oversize tolerance before HT & gets ground to spec anyway?

Thanks petertha
True, A-2 will distort less than O-1, I always purchase oversized stock to allow for the distortion of the heat treating process whether it be O-1 or A-2, It just happened that I had a piece of O-1 that size on hand.
I ran across this guy a couple of years ago and he had oversize O-1 flat stock up the ying yang, all different thicknesses and widths, and they were all anywhere from 2-3 foot bars, 3/8" - 1" in thickness.
Needless to say why all the tools I have made and posted here are made from O-1 Steel.
Thanks
Doug
