I must just add how much this reminds me of a toy we had as kids in the 50s, which looked very similar, a “bomb”. You put in a percussion cap, threw it as high as you could, and it made a satisfying Crack! on impact. I really expected it to go Bang! when it hit the hole! Anybody remember these?

On the subject of toys, I remember a cap toy from the 50's. Put a cap in a hole in the wooden "hammer". Put a feathered, wooden "dart" in the hole. Smack the hammer on a rock, brick, or chunk of wood. The cap launched the dart into the air. I am sure it was banned as unsafe. if you were reckless, you would put extra caps into the hole. Oh how did any of us survive?

Hemmjo, I remember them. But ours were due-cast aluminium with plastic feathers. Huge fun!

looks like it works but the design build is a really inefficient way to do it.
