Here’s a small machine I salvaged yesterday (it has a lot of interesting components, especially brass/bronze) I wonder what it was for? I speculate it was a knitting machine, for hosiery. Or bobble hats. The casting has broken on the support arm, so the large disc with the teeth is inverted.

Does it have a makers mark Phillip as it appears not to be a one-of? A makers mark tells so so much more than a photo alone.

I think that it looks a lot like a modern sock knitting thingy. So your guess at hosiery was right. As you say some useful looking bits there.

Yes, Ronald, it was made by C. Hague, Nottinghamshire, cast into the base (which I have now jettisoned) But I have kept a little brass plaque, which shows it was no. 14. I shall have to rummage around to try to find it.

Correction: B. Hague Co Ltd, Poplar Street, Nottingham. And 14 refers to gauge, not a serial no.

That sure is an interestinh piece of kit Philip: I'm not familiar with it & i think you are on the right track re use.

If all else fails with full identification from Homemade tools members and Googling your efforts could be directed to The Traditional Tools Group Inc. who specialise in identification of "old tools" and their use. I believe a pic of the makers mark may be of assistance although with the details you have that may not be necessary.

I would like to know more when you confirm use.
