Happy New Year. I am a little behind on following all the great tool introductions at HMT and sorry about the delay in asking these questions. I like all your tool building articles.
Question: In your photo "Machining the Gland" you show a lathe tool holder for holding carbide inserts for thread cutting and the tool holder looks like it could hold the insert on either the right or left side. Did you make this tool holder or is it available elsewhere? The reason I ask is because I sometimes use the method of holding the carbide insert upside down with the spindle running in reverse so I can safely thread very closely to a shoulder. Using a left had thread cutting holder works the best in this technique. If your carbide insert holder takes both right and left hand tool positions then that would be ideal for what I need to do.

Answer to your question about the threading tool, yes I did make the tool and you can get the plans right here in HMT website, the tool works right up to jaws on the chuck or right up to the live center, it works exceptionally well, the insert size is listed in the plans.

a car shock absorver tube and piston can be easly recycled to be used in this tool.
now I have to make one...
Piggy back! How about a dead gas strut such as is on truck cap lids, mine are always kicking the bucket so have a few around dead.
