Hi. I am a newly retired locomotive engineer for a large freight railroad. I restore British sports cars and fly RC airplanes. Thought this site might be of some help.

A lot of "special tools" in the restoration of old British sports cars. I need something to balance wire wheels. Regular spin balancer does not work due to where the inside surface has to be indexed as a cone, not a flat surface.

A wire wheel balancer, very interesting. This link might help a little: Homemade Tools Search: wheel balancer - HomemadeTools.net . I'm also going to move this discussion into our Tools in Progress subforum so that you can get some ideas for that build.

    Mike,

Most of the wheel balancers listed are motorcycle type which don't suit your wheels directly. However, all you need do is to make tapered sleeve to suit your wheels and fit that to a parallel shaft. I have made something like that in the past and I'll try to remember to dig it out and take some pix. to post here.
