The true value of cellphones: widespread proliferation of cameras across nearly all segments of society. Has anyone else noticed that the ubiquity of portable cameras seems to correlate with diminished interest in UFOs, ghosts, alien sightings, etc.?

Well if I ever see one I will be sure to take a picture of it just don't expect the pic to also include a selfie I'm not into those.

The cameras are also going a long way to thin the herd...

259 "selfie deaths" in six years; a quote from the above...

Of the 259 deaths, researchers found the leading cause to be drowning, followed by incidents involving transportation — for example, taking a selfie in front of an oncoming train — and falling from heights. Other causes of selfie-related deaths include animals, firearms and electrocution.

“The selfie deaths have become a major public health problem,” Agam Bansal, the study’s lead author, told The Washington Post.

While at the Grand Canyon, my wife and I watched a tourist jump down from the walkway onto a small rock ledge about six feet below in order to take a selfie with the canyon in the background.

Apparently devoid of any sense of self-preservation, he gave no thought to the possibilities...

Old rock cracks under the impact of his weight
Rock has fine sand/gravel on surface and he loses his footing
He stumbles on impact and rolls off edge

The canyon is a mile deep. He would have had a long time to regret his actions. (On edit: 18 seconds to be precise)

But I can not leave without the Internet, wherever I am ...
Here, dear, friends, I am using this thing to read and answer you, and if you could imagine where I am ...
Others used to spend time reading the newspaper there ...

But, I keep a social and well educated person, and I never get my phone out at the restaurant or being with friends or family
I find a phone completely ruins internet at any level. My vehicle [magic carpet?] of choice is a laptop. Less cost, better security, better keying, obviously larger screen, who knows what increase in battery life, open multiple tabs without a care, not loaded with a s.hitload of dumbass apps....and will not 'fall in' where others used to read the newspaper. Bulk of photos, I use a real nice but old digital camera, I relate best with a tactile control mechanism than scrolling multiple screens.

My phone does [I allow] four things. 1] Inbound calls; which make it through my filtering scheme. 2] Photos; or occasional videos of various importance. 3] Texting; ability to relay accurate detail even when connections are sporadic. 4] Alarm clock I equate to a calendar, as I'm employed.
Finally, 1 more inconsequential use- when a photo won't work, I record tough things like part numbers in the note pad.
All those fit in with Christophe's tote and my stellar personality. ! ? & $ too.
    Sincerely,
    Toolmaker51

The benefit I see with modern communications is we are able to misunderstand each other so much faster!
