I worked at a company that made composite tubes (fiberglass and resin wound). One of the engineers was an amateur drummer and loved Pearl drums. He took some scrap sections of tubing about 16" and had our centerless grinder guy take them down to about 3/16" wall thickness and the paint shop paint one gloss black. He bought some drum hardware and created a drum from it all. He had a Pearl rep come out and look it over. They though it sounded really good but didn't really like the painted look for drum kits. They did, however start buying the tubes for shells and used them for marching band drum lines because they were lighter than the wood type. The company was a huge cluster *&@^ but interesting processes.
