Remember how crazy everybody went for Y2K? Every computer controlled device was going to burst into flames, and civilization would immediately collapse. Turned out one elevator in one apartment building stopped working briefly. Credit where credit is due, a lot of people worked really hard to update all the software and get things ready. But still, it was way overblown.
It's going to happen again in 2038. Linux has taken over the world. Every device that operates behind the scenes running everything from your Android phone to wireless access points to your television to your car's infotainment system to every supercomputer on the planet... pretty much every one of them is running Linux. If they're an older 32 bit machine then we're facing the same Y2K bug again in 2038:

I don't understand why but I've come to believe that societies need a tragedy in the making to look forward to. Like "climate change." (oh, I'm so scared) I think they want to believe that everyone is in danger of something or other.
Stupid is forever, ignorance can be fixed.

In 1989, I finished a package for our group that ran almost 30,000 lines. In 1999 it was still in use. They asked me to come back and assess Y2K vulnerability. I found around 600 lines that would need to be changed.
They opted to buy new.
