Yes this a a very nice tool. I have been trying to come up with an idea to build a tool for measuring cylinder bores. I am thinking now of how yours might be adapted to measure deeper holes, cylinders for example. Measuring taper and roundness, would be so easy if the tool had enough reach to get down 5 or 6 inches.
It should be easy enough to lengthen the movable arm put the indicator ball on the "outside" edge of that part. Perhaps get a DTI with the indicator dial on end rather than the side like that one you have? I am thinking the indicator has to be down in the bore to maintain the accuracy(or precision, I still get those two confused) of that device.
Hemmjo, there is only tool that will do the job for cylinder bores and that is a dedicated bore gauge. The indicator is is in your hand and the gauge head is on a long stem, easily reaching the length of a deep bore. With practice you can read to tenths and was all we used in the grinding shop. I have seen them for sale new as low as 20 dollars.
I have looked at bore gauges in the past, I know that is what I really should have. I see them from under $100 to over $1000. I see one for 60 at Amazon just now.
I have never seen one other than catalogs. I do wonder what the mechanism is the changes from the horizontal travel of the gauge bars to the rotation of the dial. Maybe that would worth while to try to develop.
