    Titanium Ring making tool

Here is a new article on my Web site explaining how I make titanium rings and also titanium/wood rings.
La Belle Note - Titanium and Wood Rings

I need to thank particularly Brian alias Bstanga , here on HMT, for his great series about turning that crazy (but rewarding) stuff that is Titanium.

I also discussed with a French colleague who showed me a similar method for cutting the ring without using an HSS drill, but using a purposely made carbide tool.
The tool is used to dig into the end of the stock for cutting the inner part of the ring, and then the same tool is used to part off the ring.
Of course, as explained by Brian, the key to success is to turn at very very low speed !

Here is the tool in question :

and here are some result :

On the left, a titanium ring, on the right a bronze ring (used as a pendant)

And this is a mixed wood and titanium ring I made for my wife. It's made out of Red sandal wood, finished with CA.

    Cheers !
    Christophe

Wow, thanks for the kind words Chris. I love the wood/Ti ring. I hope you post more on how that was done, I'm going to have a look at your site now. Again great job!
    All the best

nice! that's called a trepanning tool. They're also really handy for creating rings/hoops/spacers from disks as you can cut away the center in one piece, then bore to size. You also end up with another, smaller disk to use for something else, instead of a pile of chips.

I recently made a couple of spacers for my bike and a bearing press tool out of the same piece of stock. Trepanned the ID of the spacers, parted off, then turned the OD of the bearing holder part of the press. Took a fraction of the time that drilling and boring would have taken and saved me some material.
