I like this,with thoughts about adapting for pin gage boxes. Those .500 and above are kind of unwieldy and use up valuable space. First thing will be if weight of any single box is counterbalanced by the others, when extended out on a tray. Mounting is an option, but preference is to have them mobile.

Captain - I like the sliding storage box design. Maybe each wooden box could have a long and narrow D-shaped handle to grab?
