Volcano eruption greatest April Fools prank ever - photo

Yesterday was April Fools' Day in America, and I saw some good ones. But I've never heard of an April Fools' joke that bested the one by Oliver "Porky" Bickar, a Sitka, Alaska resident who faked a volcanic eruption.

Bickar flew his plane over a dormant Alaskan volcano, Mount Edgecumbe, and dropped in around 100 tires doused in fuel, which he then set on fire, before spraypainting "April Fool" around the volcano's rim in large letters. A bit blunt, but still legendary.

Several years ago I knew a radio station DJ who was an avid jokester (Bill Phillips, 52, Rockford, died Tues., Sept. 30, 1997) played a classic on the city of Rockford Illinois. About 6 am in his morning show that the stealth bomber had landed at the Rockford airport. He did advise people to not try to go see it as it was in stealth mode and could not be seen. You would not believe the crowd that flocked to the airport to see the "invisible bomber", one guy took his 6 year old son to see it and as luck would have it, they could not find where it was parked. The guy got so mad for such a "cruel hoax on the public" he called the radio station and demanded they fire the crazy lunatic. The rest of the general public thought it was brilliant. I could not find anything on the interweb about the joke but someone might which is why I included his info I pulled off his obit.

A few years ago now, Dick Smith, (an Australian Entrepreneur) promised to solve the (at the time) drought conditions and lack of drinking water in Australia by towing an iceberg from Antarctica into Sydney Harbour.
A big turn out of all the press to meet the tug at the dock ensued with reporters and camera crews jostling for position in the pre-dawn light. Lots of red faces all round when they realised the date.

Can you even imagine what would happen if some lit off 100 tires nowadays? I'm sure someone would have to call in the feds and every state environmental protection agency or private eco group they could think of, Porky would be hauled away in hand cuffs and charged with some "eco crime", fined more than he could make in a lifetime, and thrown in prison.
Over a joke. People have no sense of humor any more.
