Very interesting. Mom and Dad built a house in 1969-70 and hired a well driller who used an antiquated old drilling rig on a 1950 Checrolet truck. It had massive reels of steel cable for drilling deep but it operated on the same principal as this. I was told it was called "Churn drilling." The driller had to drill over 200 feet deep to get a good supply of water.

Localy I have head a nickname for commercial rigs like this, "thumper" type drill rig. Many used localy to drill thru the shale bed rock we have here.
