An interesting though ultimately impractical firearm, it was designed in the UK, and first sold in 1901. It saw some action in the Boer War and in World War I.

Later it made some critical appearances in film, most notably by Sean Connery in Zardoz, and as the weapon with which Miles Archer was shot in The Maltese Falcon.
