Wooden jaws for a small table vise

Hi again,

I often use this little vise clamped at the edge of my work table, but for the kind of work I do the most (luthiery or wooden jeweleries or any delicate items), I need soft jaws, and by the way larger jaws, so I did this mod :



The jaws are made of hardwood (oak), but instead of having removable jaws, that always fall off or necessitate two hands to hold it while closing the vise, I preferred to add permanent wooden jaws.
I carved in the wood two mortises, the exact size of the steel jaws, so that they just fit in the jaws, and I epoxied them in place.

Great modification and the design gives me even more ideas about using other soft materials and attaching these with magnets.

Very nice mod, Christophe. Would a softer wood work just as well for your purposes?

Hi DIYer, yes, I just used the wood I had under hand, let's say that the hardwood will not wear as fast as soft wood and I wouldn't have to replace it too early.

That's true. Work with what you have. I just asked that question because I am looking into making some soft jaws too and it will be for aluminum tubing. Thanks for the insight.
