    It's usually the bride's parents who foot the bill for the wedding, and in many cultures, they must provide a dowery. I think the parents are so desperate to get their female offspring out of the house they will go deeply in debt, just to get rid of her.
    Judging by the expense that cake must have set them back, the bride would be a very bad choice to marry.
