You can combine these two methods with barrel nuts. I used barrel nuts for an underbed box because of the end-grain weakness. Had I see this video before I made that box, I'd definitely have used wood screws and dowels instead. You have to get the alignment pretty close to spot on with barrel nuts.

Yeah, I'm pretty familiar with barrel nuts...but I think they're limited in size, expensive, and like you said, they're really difficult to line up. Too bad the shorts format is a minute, it would have been a good one to add. Adding a dowel and then using a screw...it's so satisfying how tight it screws in. Like, you know it shouldn't feel like that as you are screwing into end grain. I guess you have to experience it...it's a weird sensation!
Yeah. They’re not as much of a time saver as dowels. I’m thinking that the dowel truck would work well in particle board and fiberboard (any direction).
