    Not necessarily. Eighteenth century colonial homes would have no plumbing. The basin would probably empty into a bucket that was then hand carried to a waste pit or to the open channel in the street that served as a sewer line similar to the way the Romans did it.

    No, that isn't what I meant. I meant eliminate the stupid tilting feature and have a simple design with a drain. But as mklotz pointed out, there probably isn't any plumbing. It would simply drain into a container under it.
