1861 William Crooks steam locomotive on display at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota. The William Crooks was the first locomotive to operate in the State of Minnesota.

I just saw this exact locomotive in person a few weeks ago when I visited that museum while visiting family. They have a great collection of full size, and scale trains.

re the William Crooks and other Victorian locomotives, so many are mechanized artwork.
Understanding craftsmanship and penchant for decoration of the era, still wondering how such labor intensive upkeep was justified.
