Just what I was thinking too! The hatchet handle renders the pistol almost useless. You certainly can't AIM it at anything or anyone accurately. The location of the pistol and it's direction makes the hatchet more useful as a hammer.

I would imagine this functioned as a shoulder stock for the firearm, when the gun was empty and no time to reload when boarding a ship it still had the hatchet to do further damage with. Any device designed where one part hinders the use of the other is not practical.

I agree. If the pistol is loaded whilst using the hatchet, you may have some “friendly fire” coming your way!!

I agree with that. One Sheriffs Deputy described one pistol they carried as "a club with bullets in it."
