They must have understood 6 degrees of freedom. Doing the maths on a slide rule must have been a nightmare.
We spelled it sly drool in the engineering class of 6T3. My wife, though not a pilot but a serious pop dancer understands roll, pitch and yaw. However, she suggested the more modern ´twerk´ for surge. Out of ingrained modesty, she would not comment on either heave or sway.
