Congratulations on his persistence, but how he twists his right mustache...?

Work or starve with impending depression. Must have cost him (ok okdon't say an arm or a leg) a bomb in those days. Surely prosthetic items were out of working class finance realms in that era? I knew a guy in 1970's who upgraded his wooden leg for an aluminium prosthetic and he was wealthy but it was the only time I heard him complain about money.

Looks more like a brazing job there, and how would he trigger the extra oxygen for cutting?
-
That’s what I thought too.

For every tool there's a process. The first guy is oxy welding not cutting. If he were cutting free hand then no DOUBT that there would be an additional piece fitted. He at least has parameters covered unlike his mate/observer who doesn't have his safety green tinted specs on..I have my Fathers pair safely stowed away...I keep them for steam punk parties. I also used to work for a program
Technical
Aid for
Disabled. I joined in 2000 when I saw a fellow carry his legless mate up 5 flights of stairs. The Olympic elevators were constantly full. He put him in a harness backpack style and strapped his legs onto the sides. I said to my wife
....that what I want to do. Th eere are so many brilliant minds working on aids for the disabled. Perhaps not as early as this shot. War and it's wounds brought medicine out of the dark ages...just saying

I agree is it welding or brazing. I am trying to figure what is causing what appears to be a secondary "flame". The flame at the torch tip look like it is a bit disconnected as it is off to one side.
Perhaps something to do with taking the photograph? Seems it would be very difficult to get the exposure as good as it is in that photo with that bright flame, yet still the rest of the shot is well exposed.

Have you ever heard about Celso Mascarenhas?
Check out his videos:

He is wearing his prostetics(during work) purely for "cosmetic" reasons(that is only for videos).

Sure does.........
History of The Prosthetic Leg Through The Ages - Amputee ...

Apr 19, 2019 — James Edward Hanger (1843 – 1919) was an American engineer who was the first amputee of The Civil War. He spent his convalescence designing a prosthetic leg, and would go on to patent his “Hanger Limb” and found the company that became Hanger Inc.

I think it's pretty clear that he is brazing or gas welding as he is feeding a filler rod of some sort with his other hand into the work. I suppose for cutting he could work the torch with both hands, using his left hand to steady the torch and work the oxygen lever.

He uses his left hand but does it looking in a mirror.

The tip has a piece attached to the side that preheats/postheats the work depending which way you orient it.
