    Are barrier nets only deployed in emergencies, hopefully it was an angled deck carrier for the sake of those personnel and aircraft stationed on the fore deck.Not so for the pilot if he ditched apparently they weren't able to save them.

    The first US angled-deck was the Truman in 1953 designed for the faster landing speed of jets. About a decade after the landing above.
