1946 atomic bomb cake controversy - photos

Vice Admiral William H.P. Blandy, his wife, and Rear Admiral Frank J. Lowry cutting a mushroom cloud shaped cake to celebrate the disbanding of Joint Army-Navy Task Force Number One, which organized the Operation Crossroads nuclear weapon tests in Bikini Atoll in 1946.

The photograph caused an uproar, and was somewhat of an early harbinger of an era of military political correctness. Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal described it as a "sign of the times" in the letter below:

Dare I say this? Will it get me a reprimand from the webmaster?
Today's large church-going population seems to be the one that wants bombs and would delight in the A-bomb cake.

Having lived, as a child, during WWII and knowing many of the people that saved our bacon, I often wonder where it all went wrong.
And how embarrassed I would be if they could see things now. I blame most of it on the hippies.

PC'ness is a supreme irritation. Early attempts at cancellation. As if pix of a 1946 Navy party went viral. . .
Those endorsing it [PC] haven't any skin in the game; they didn't win it, represents no value to them.
Those who carried things out know the past is past.
Everybody on the planet knew atomic age had begun, trying to hide it accomplishes what?
    Sincerely,

Even then, feelings didn't give a damn about the facts.

I'm too young, old as I am, to have been there and known the people who paid for the freedom that the left is now using to deny freedom to others. But I can read and think very well for myself, and I am embarrassed by the way the Overton Window is being dragged to an untenable extreme.
