The Raptor program in the early 90's had a pilot on a UAV as backup in case automation or telemetry failed. These were very early experiments in UAV technology and the 1st prototype crashed. The pilot was an insurance policy on the 2nd article. Scroll down to view the UAV. It shows what appears to be a "seat" for the pilot that was installed after it was discovered wind force was too great for the pilot!
