The charcoal heats up wood that gives off gas that the engine runs on...
A few years ago I tried to convince a big industrial client to install a gasifier. They produce an incredible amount of contaminated fuel that can't be burnt, and they were trying to figure out a way to shove it into their furnace. I figured a gasifier was a good solution. I almost had them convinced, but in the end they didn't do it. That was disappointing, I really wanted to play with a gasifier.
