When I was a kid we only dialed five numbers, no letters...

I still remember my aunt's and my grandparents' numbers. Regent 31874 and park 24548. Later it was 733-1874 and 722-4548.

My great grandmother rented a room in her house to the phone company. A lady sat in there all the time, plugging cords into various jacks to make connections. When i was 7-8, (late 50's) they built a little brick building next to her house for the new automatic switch gear.
