Also it should be strong enough for hanging tools, if needed.

vrey nice, adding threaded rod was a good idea
Nice but just buy barn door hardware.
Plaah... Could you please demonstrate how to use that barn door hardware for this kind of purpose? And why that would be better?
How to make it versatile, light weighted and keep price reasonable in that way?
For some reason i feel somewhat tired about comments wich doesn't seem to make sense... just throwing something in, without further information.
