60" H spreader bar

A project I have been working on for quite some time is near enough to completion that we are going to have to mock mount it in the pickup so we can determine the final mounting for the unit. TO do this I want to be able to lower it into the pickup bed as a single assembly rather than have to disassemble it and re assemble it in the truck then take it apart again to remove put it back together and finish the remaing parts to it
To do this I need a spreader bar which can lift straight up from the sides and not apply any squeeze pressure
This is what I made out of some scrap rectangular tubing and some 5/8 sucker rod I have a lot of that rod

After washing the bits of tubing apart with the torch I was ready to make the spreader bar

First make the lifting loop

Next start adding the bracing and sling loops made out of 2 8ft lengths of the rod

Use an old V pulley as the guide for forming the sling loops

now to rinse and repeat 3 more times

As Tow-Mater said it fits perfectly. And it works good too. Just enough spread that even on the wider models of the machine we are developing the straps will not be against the paint. the 18inch spread for the straps allows for stable lifting of the 8 ft long 5 ft wide machine can tilt it fore and aft as much as 5 inches and still not have to worry about slippage
